My name is Mark De Verno and I am honored to be coaching the U11 C team.
Coaching and teaching have been a significant part of my life. I've had the privilege of head coaching the last five years over in KMHA, including three in the competitive program at the Tier 1 level. Before this, I taught children overseas for 5 years in Japan and karate to students of all ages. One might say I have the coaching bug.
The U11 cohort is in a special time and place. They are at the peak age for skill development, yet we are transitioning to full-ice hockey. The team will be following Hockey Canada's Long Term Development Plan, which is a balance of skills and gameplay. Athletes will learn how to play as part of a team, and not just as individuals.
A particular emphasis will be placed on habits that will lead to long-term success: focus, intensity, positivity, and willingness to try new things. We will have a safe and encouraging environment.
The commitment will be 4-5 times per week including games, practices, and dryland. The priority is family, school, and hockey. The commitment to the team should supersede other sports and activities.
Players are expected to show great respect for everyone involved in the game, teammates, opponents, referees, coaches, and parents. They are also likely to work hard, be a good teammate, and have a positive attitude. We’ll have a ton of fun improving and working as a team.
We will be attending 4-5 tournaments plus Provincials, pending qualification. Below is a list of planned tournaments, however, these are subject to change:
* Our team must qualify to be invited
The expectation for team fees will be around $1850 per player. These fees are in addition to the KGHA registration fees. More information, and the team budget, will be discussed at a parent meeting that will take place once the team has been formed.
I am happy to answer any questions and can be contacted at mdeverno@hotmail.com.
